We are seeking a Staff Engineer to join our fast-growing agile team in the Pet Value Stream, in which you will be working on all elements of our Pet Insurance offering including quote and buy, service, claims and agent experience.

You will work very closely with the squad leadership, interact closely with Principal Engineer and Chapter Lead to elaborate upon path to technical excellence and assist the Head of Capability whenever required.

Working alongside our third-party system provider, you will be working with industry standard technologies such as JavaScript, HTML, CSS and SQL and best in class tools such as Git, Jira and Confluence. The successful candidate would also have strong experience building and maintaining REST APIs and has previously worked with cloud-based technology (Azure preferable).

The Pet Values Stream is made up of small teams, that are inclusive, open and collaborative. We encourage team members to share ideas, solutions and decision making to drive forward the effectiveness of the teams and products that we deliver.

Main Duties

  • Working closely with our third party company called FintechOS, building relationships and help driving our standards.
  • Development and release of changes to our online journeys including price comparison flows and online claims.
  • Development and release of changes to our agent led journeys.
  • Development and release of changes to our back-office processes including pricing and product adjustments.
  • Development and maintenance of our online document and reporting suite.
  • Implementation and delivery of relevant coding technologies to defined standards.
  • Implementation and execution of thorough unit testing and version control.
  • Understanding of emerging technologies and their suitability to business demands.
  • Adherence to Agile Scrum methodology.
  • Working directly with the Product Owner and business to develop solutions to support the product roadmap.
  • Working very closely with the squad leadership.
  • Working with shared services teams to ensure dependencies are raised and managed.
  • Interacting closely with Chapter Lead to elaborate upon path to technical excellence.
  • Assisting the Principal Engineer whenever required.
  • Working in an autonomous manner under broad direction.
  • Promoting engineering best practices and adherence to engineering first principles.
  • Helping to develop and promote the long-term technical strategy.
  • Supporting the deployment of changes into the production environment and aid in the investigation of live issues or incidents.
  • Ensuring the software delivered is performant, secure and scalable.
  • Be involved in and push for high standards in code reviewing and monitoring coding standards.

Experience and Qualifications Required

Experience and Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant coding languages.
  • Understanding of Agile Scrum methodology and practices.
  • Ability to produce quality documentation as necessary.
  • Able to transfer knowledge between other members of the team through mentoring and coaching.
  • A focus on continuous improvement and a desire to push your ideas forward.
  • Able to plan and coordinate technical requirements and tasks across the team.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving and a desire for continual learning and improvement.

Technical skills

Essential

  • Commercial experience developing with JavaScript, HTML and CSS.
  • Experience of implementing and consuming SOAP, RESTful or JSON-RPC web services.
  • Knowledge of database concepts and writing SQL queries.
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git.
  • Working in an Agile environment.
  • An appreciation of CI/CD concepts.
  • Experience of unit and acceptance testing.
  • Working knowledge/understanding of BDD.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with Cloud technologies such as Azure.
  • Working knowledge of UI testing frameworks such as Selenium.
  • Experience of performance testing using tools such as JMeter.
  • An understanding of networking (load balancing, security, firewalls, reverse proxies etc).
  • Experience in the FintechOS platform.

Interview Process

There will be a three-stage process for this vacancy; one online test and two 60-minute competency interviews via MS Teams.

Location

For Hybrid workers (within a 50-mile radius of our Cardiff HQ) there is an expectation to work from the office twice a month.  For remote workers (outside of a 50-mile radius of our Cardiff HQ) there is an expectation to attend the office a handful of times a year when required (i.e big meetings, workshops etc).
