This is an exciting opportunity to join a multi-skilled agile team in the Operations Tribe within IT Delivery, in which you will be part of the development of our core policy administration system that underpins our customer facing portal, direct web sites, aggregator channels and contact centres.

We are a progressive team that is currently working/will be working with languages and frameworks such as Java and Guidewire, and best in class tools such as Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Docker and Kubernetes. 

IT Delivery is made up of small teams, that are inclusive, open and collaborative.  We encourage team members to share ideas, solutions and decision making to drive forward the effectiveness of the teams and products that we deliver.

We have an opportunity for a Software Engineer to contribute to the development of a variety of solutions within one of our multidisciplinary Squads.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and inquisitive individual, who can think creatively to solve problems and meet user requirements. You must have a keen interest in software engineering and be ready to research and learn new techniques, languages and frameworks as required.

As we work within the Agile/Scrum framework, we are looking for someone who can work both independently and as part of a team within a fast-paced and changing environment. This requires an individual who can deliver to agreed timelines, communicating effectively and thinking innovatively.

Main Duties

  • Development and publication of our core policy/billing administration system.
  • Development and publication of our core integrations.
  • Contributing to the development and refinement of user requirements.
  • Designing innovative solutions to solve problems and meet requirements.
  • Implementing solutions using a variety of programming languages, frameworks, tools and techniques.
  • Developing appropriate tests to support code.
  • Producing applicable technical documentation.
  • Actively contribute to Scrum ceremonies such as Refinement, Sprint Planning and Retrospective.
  • Contribute to improvements of our technical excellence and ways of working within Squad, Chapter.
  • Implementation and delivery of relevant coding technologies to defined standards.
  • Understanding of emerging technologies and their suitability to business demands.
  • Working directly with the Product Owner and business to develop solutions to support the product roadmap.
  • Help to develop and promote the long-term technical strategy.
  • Support the deployment of changes into the production environment.
  • Ensuring the software delivered is performant, secure and scalable.

Experience Required

  • Ability to creatively think around a brief and challenge it if necessary.
  • Knowledge of all relevant coding languages.
  • Understanding of Agile Scrum methodology and practices.
  • Prioritisation and time management skills to hit deadlines.
  • Communication skills with the confidence to communicate ideas effectively to peers, seniors and management.
  • Ability to produce quality documentation as necessary.
  • A focus on continuous improvement and a desire to push your ideas forward.
  • Able to plan and coordinate technical requirements and tasks across the team.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving and a desire for continual learning and improvement.

Technical Skills

Essential

  • Commercial experience developing with Java 8 or later.
  • Commercial experience with Guidewire BC/PC 8 or later.
  • Knowledge of the Java web services and Spring frameworks/libraries.
  • An understanding of REST and SOAP.
  • Knowledge of database concepts and SQL.
  • Familiar with build tools such as Maven or Ant.
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git or SVN.
  • An appreciation of CI/CD concepts and using tools such as Jenkins and Ansible.
  • Experience of implementing and consuming SOAP or RESTful web services.
  • Experience of unit and acceptance testing.  

Desirable

  • Experience of working with Cloud technologies such as Azure and GCP.
  • Experience with containerisation products such as Kubernetes and Docker. 
  • Policy Center or Billing Center accreditation.
  • Awareness of Guidewire products such as Policy Centre and Billing Centre.
  • An understanding of networking (load balancing, security, firewalls, reverse proxies etc). 
  • Experience of deploying to and configuring web servers such as Tomcat, JBoss or Apache.
  • Experience of developing server-side applications.
