What does a Data Analyst do?
Think of data analysts as detectives of the digital world! They work with all sorts of information, like numbers, facts, and figures, just like detectives work with clues and evidence.
Their main job is to collect, organise, and make sense of data to help businesses and organisations make better decisions.
We sat down with Josh Herbert, a Data Analyst, who tells us all about what you can expect from a day in the life of a Data Analyst.
What does a 'typical' day look like for you?
A typical day usually begins with a team stand-up call to discuss what we’re working on, run through tickets on our JIRA Kanban board, and collaboratively work through any blockers together.
We tackle new challenges and opportunities, support different departments and work towards the same goal - to provide insightful analysis to the business that allows stakeholders around the business to make valuable, data-driven decisions.
We set aside time each day to work on requests which can be querying and gathering data using SQL, creating dashboards with Business Intelligence (BI) tools like MicroStrategy, and meetings with stakeholders. But it’s not all work - we make sure to have fun too! We have social activities planned for the team to enjoy together throughout the year, like crazy golf, shuffleboard tournaments, quizzes and other games and events.
If you had to pick your favourite thing about the role, what would it be?
What I love most about being a Data Analyst is the sheer variety of the role. We work with data and provide insights for various business areas, such as Marketing, Finance, and Underwriting. Working with different data keeps the work engaging and interesting.
I feel a strong sense of purpose that comes with solving problems for stakeholders or producing analysis that helps them make data-driven decisions that drive the business forward. I also appreciate that self-development is encouraged and supported in this role.
What makes a Data Analyst role different from any other out there?
As Data Analysts, we’re often required to uniquely blend analytical and creative thinking to extract insights from data and communicate findings to stakeholders. It’s a dynamic role that requires a commitment to learning and adapting to new technologies and methods as they emerge to stay ahead of the curve.
And, what makes this role at Admiral different from other companies?

If you’re wondering how to get into data analytics, don’t let a lack of experience or technical knowledge put you off applying for a Data Analyst role at Admiral. We provide lots of internal training and support.
Our team has Analysts from a variety of career backgrounds, from Contact Centre Handlers to university graduates and managers from other business areas. Many of our Analysts had never written any code or worked in data before joining our team. If you could choose a superpower, what would it be and why?
