An insight into working in International Pricing at Admiral

Emma McCarthy is a Senior Pricing Analyst working in International Pricing, primarily with our Spanish business Admiral Seguros. Read on to have an insight into the role.

What do you do in Admiral and how long have you been working here?

I’m a Senior Pricing Analyst in International Pricing and I’ve been at Admiral for nearly four years. I work primarily with our Spanish business, Admiral Seguros, as well as managing a small team and aiding with the training and recruitment of our new starters.

How did you get into your role? What’s your background?

I joined in perhaps a less ‘traditional’ route than many of our graduate Analysts do. I did my masters in Operational Research and Statistics at Cardiff University and was offered a chance to undertake my dissertation on a project in Analytics in Admiral. After completing my three-month internship, I moved on to join International Pricing in September 2018. The internship was a great way to get settled in, learn the business, the buildings and the people without too much pressure!

What’s it like working in Pricing, and do you get involved in exciting projects?

Working in Pricing is very interesting as the work is extremely varied. You can get involved in anything, from running models using statistical tools, making improvements to our international businesses’ rating structures, or co-ordinating a cross-country project. International Pricing is unique as we can work with colleagues all over the business, including overseas, and share our knowledge to help improve pricing and processes across Admiral Group. This means you’re always working on something exciting and crucial to the business, so you always feel like you’re making a difference.

What’s your favourite part of working in Pricing?

My favourite part of working in Pricing is the varied work, and the ability to be challenged daily. No two days are ever the same, and you learn and develop skills that you can go on to use in any area of the business. Having enjoyment at work is one of the fundamentals at Admiral, and it’s very true for International Pricing. We make sure to take part in virtual fun activities and coffee breaks to have a chat and support each other. We love our personal differences and cherish our diversity, and we especially love to learn about new cultures during discussions with our colleagues overseas!

Do you think there are opportunities to grow and develop here?

There’s plenty of opportunity to grow in Admiral and in Pricing especially - responsibility is given to those who prove they’re capable of handling it very early on. This means you could be leading projects, helping with recruitment or developing your people management skills early on in your career which pushes you to grow and develop all the skills needed. The training is very robust, and analysts will spend 6-12 months learning the fundamentals of Pricing and Analytics within Admiral. This training will create the foundation to help anyone reach their career goals and grow and develop as a professional.
