MBA - FAQs

Want to know some of the questions we get asked at the end of an interview for one of our MBA programs? Here’s a comprehensive list, along with the answers!

What is the duration of your MBA programs?

Our MBA programs are around 12-18 months. The SPARK Leadership Program tends to be slightly longer as there is an initial 6-month training period.

However, both programs are full-time and permanent roles. The above timescales refer only to the time after which we expect strong performers to move on to another role within the company.

What happens at the end of the program?

For high performers on our Future Leaders Program, we expect you to move into a senior position within the company at or around the 12-month mark, setting you up for a successful, rewarding, and exciting career with us. The role you move into could be a newly created role or a role that has recently become available due to people moving around the business. You will likely have various options and choices if you have impressed us during your first 12 months.

The SPARK Leadership Program usually leads to a permanent role in either our International or UK pricing function, or in the data teams of our international operations (providing you are fluent in the local language). You would take on a permanent role leading strategic projects across one of these data functions. However, there are also opportunities to move into other positions within the company.

Many of our CEOs and senior managers began their Admiral journey on one of our MBA programs.

Is it a permanent role?

Yes, after an initial six-month probationary period, you would be a permanent member of staff.

What projects will I be working on?

On the Future Leaders Program projects could be in any area of the business, but are generally centered on strategy, product development and/or new ventures.

For the SPARK Leadership Program, projects will be in the areas of pricing, risk, and/or analytics. Projects are strategic in nature to help us grow across all our international operations.

How are projects allocated?

Projects are allocated based on business priority at the time and on the individual’s interests, passions, and skills. You can also make a business case for your own project idea.

Will there be an opportunity to travel?

Yes, we have operations in Spain, Italy, France and the USA, so travel is possible to any of these locations. Travel is a key requirement on the SPARK Leadership Program, and optional for the Future Leaders Program (based on business need, language fluency, and your own interests and skills).

Where will I be based?

Both programs are based in our HQ in Cardiff, UK. However, we have committed to hybrid working, so you won’t need to come into the office or travel to Cardiff every day.

There may also be opportunities to work in one of our international offices or to relocate permanently after a few years provided you are fluent in the local language.

If you wanted to be based in another operation from the start, the role may look slightly different, as you wouldn’t be joining the Group level program.

What does an ideal candidate look like?

We are looking for MBAs who are smart, switched on and have strong business acumen with the desire to succeed and the ability to solve real business issues. We also want people who have strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. You need to have the ability to take ownership of your projects whilst still collaboratively effectively with colleagues across the business. We want you to be able to roll up your sleeves and get involved from day one. However, no specific experience or knowledge is required.

What makes a successful MBA at Admiral?

There are no set KPIs as each project is unique and will have different objectives. It is a combination of attitude, people skills and leadership potential as well as quality of work that makes an MBA successful at Admiral. We expect MBAs to make a difference to our business and to really have an impact, as well as build strong relationships with colleagues at all levels of the business.

What experience is required?

We are very open minded when it comes to experience. Previous candidates average around 5 years’ experience, but this is not a set number. We have had successful candidates from a range of different backgrounds including consulting, journalism, marketing, engineering, etc.

For the SPARK Leadership program, strong data skills are required – gained either through an initial degree in a numerical discipline, or through work experience.

How is performance evaluated on the programs?

There are no strict KPIs as such. You will have regular catchups with your manager and team to discuss your progress and there will be a lot of opportunity to gain feedback throughout.

Do you organise visas?

Yes, we provide visa sponsorship for successful candidates, as well as for their dependants.

What is the culture at Admiral like?

Admiral has four pillars which help define our unique workplace culture:  Communication, Equality, Reward & Recognition, and Fun!

These have been the basis for some of our greatest achievements, including being consistently named as one of the Sunday Times Best Companies to work for in the UK. We have an informal, yet professional working environment where staff are trusted to have autonomy in their roles. There is a flat hierarchy where decisions are made collaboratively and not just at the top. There are also endless opportunities to advance your career. By investing in our people and maintaining a supportive workplace, we can assist our staff in achieving their career goals and personal aspirations.

What is the Ministry of Fun (MOF)?

Fun is one of our four pillars and the MOF was set up to provide this within our daily routines. MOF gives all staff an opportunity to put forward their ideas for games or competitions. There are monthly fun events for the whole business where staff can win prizes or take a few minutes away from work to have fun with their colleagues.

If you have any other questions that we have not answered here then please reach out to us and we will be happy to help!
