About the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join a multi-skilled agile team in the Operations Tribe within IT Delivery, in which you will be part of the development of our core policy administration system that underpins our customer facing portal, direct web sites, aggregator channels and contact centres.

We are a progressive team that is currently working/will be working with languages and frameworks such as Java and Guidewire, and best in class tools such as Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Docker and Kubernetes. 

IT Delivery is made up of small teams, that are inclusive, open and collaborative.  We encourage team members to share ideas, solutions and decision making to drive forward the effectiveness of the teams and products that we deliver.

Main Duties

  • Development and publication of our core policy/billing administration system.
  • Development and publication of our core integrations.
  • Implementation and delivery of relevant coding technologies to defined standards.
  • Implementation and execution of thorough unit testing and version control.
  • Understanding of emerging technologies and their suitability to business demands.
  • Adherence to Agile Scrum methodology. 
  • Working directly with the Product Owner and business to develop solutions to support the product roadmap.
  • Working alongside and collaborating with other Senior Software Engineers on the team.
  • Support and mentoring for other members of the team.
  • Work with shared services teams to ensure dependencies are raised and managed.
  • Help to develop and promote the long-term technical strategy.
  • Support the deployment of changes into the production environment and aid in the investigation of live issues or incidents.
  • Ensuring the software delivered is performant, secure and scalable.
  • Code reviewing/monitoring coding standards.
  • Technical Guidance and support across the VS and capability.
  • Advocacy for Technical Improvements across the VS and capability.
  • Collaboration with Principal Engineer and Chapter Leads.
  • Collaboration with Leadership in the VS.
  • Communication with Stakeholders across IT.

Experience Required:

  • Ability to creatively think around a brief and challenge it if necessary.
  • Thorough knowledge of all relevant coding languages.
  • Understanding of Agile Scrum methodology and practices.
  • Prioritisation and time management skills to hit deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to communicate ideas effectively to peers, seniors and management.
  • Ability to produce quality documentation as necessary.
  • Able to transfer knowledge between other members of the team through mentoring and coaching.
  • A focus on continuous improvement and a desire to push your ideas forward.
  • Able to plan and coordinate technical requirements and tasks across the team.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving and a desire for continual learning and improvement.
  • Being able to work with Principal Engineers and Chapter leads to discuss the long-term technical vision of the Agile Release Trains (ARTs).
  • Discusses the alignment of priorities and the effective execution of ongoing initiatives.
  • Prioritise improvements based on impact and feasibility in our given skill set.
  • Meet with non-technical stakeholders to articulate the risk and value of the proposed technical improvements.
  • Drive best practice and advocate technical excellence while facilitate coordination efforts within their ART.
  • Act as points of contact, ensuring efficient collaboration across teams and disciplines driving the North Star.

Technical Skills:

Essential

  • Commercial experience developing with Java 8 or later.
  • Commercial experience with Guidewire BC/PC 8 or later.
  • Experience of developing server-side applications.
  • Knowledge of the Java web services and Spring frameworks/libraries.
  • An understanding of REST and SOAP.
  • Knowledge of database concepts and SQL.
  • Familiar with build tools such as Maven or Ant.
  • Knowledge of version control systems such as Git or SVN.
  • An appreciation of CI/CD concepts and using tools such as Jenkins and Ansible.
  • Experience of deploying to and configuring web servers such as Tomcat, JBoss or Apache.
  • Experience of implementing and consuming SOAP or RESTful web services.
  • Experience of unit and acceptance testing.  

Desirable

  • Experience of working with Cloud technologies such as Azure and GCP.
  • Experience with containerisation products such as Kubernetes and Docker. 
  • Policy Center or Billing Center accreditation.
  • Awareness of Guidewire products such as Policy Centre and Billing Centre.
  • An understanding of networking (load balancing, security, firewalls, reverse proxies etc). 

Salary, Benefits and Work-Life Balance
