How to work from home effectively

Whether you live alone or you're having to entertain three children, working from home is an adjustment for us all. Although working in your PJs all day sounds great, it's advised that you try and set some boundaries for yourself where possible, in order to keep productive and more importantly, look after your own wellbeing.

1. Create the right working environment

While the sofa or bedroom may be relaxing, it can have long-lasting effects on posture if not used correctly. Ensure you support your lower back, and find a solid seat that supports you in an upright position. Create a dedicated workspace, if possible, use a separate, quiet room that is away from distractions. Sunlight can have a big impact on your mental health, and it will brighten up your room. Keep your space organised and fully stocked with everything you need for a productive day.

2. Get started early

Wake up early and get dressed! Setting a start time for work will motivate you to get going. Why not make the most of this extra time in the morning? Set your priorities and take control of the day. You can get some household duties done, prepare some activities for the kids, or just make yourself a kickstart healthy breakfast.

3. Structure your day

You would assume work-life balance would be better working from home but it's very easy to get lost in an activity. It's important to set a time to finish work and make sure you stick to it. Plan ahead, set your deadlines, book your meetings, and schedule your tasks.

4. Take regular breaks

Taking regular breaks is important. Step away from your computer and refocus for a while. Government guidelines say we can go out for one form of exercise - go for a walk or a cycle in your local area, or do a home workout.

5. Stay connected

Pick up the phone and chat with your work colleagues. This doesn't always have to be about work. Why don't you check in on how people are doing generally and grab a virtual cuppa together?
