Admiral Aspire Intern to Part Time Junior Data Analyst

Abdul Kasim joined us on the Admiral Aspire internship last summer, and has since accepted a permanent role as a part time Junior Data Analyst.

Read about his experience below.

What attracted you to the 2021 Admiral Aspire Summer internship?

I initially planned to complete a summer internship at the end of my second year at university and throughout the year kept an eye on whether Admiral had launched theirs, as it’s such a huge company with a great reputation. When the internship opened, I didn’t think twice before applying. It was the perfect opportunity to kick start my career and gain relevant work experience in addition to the opportunity of networking with industry professionals.

Another aspect that really interested me was the willingness from Admiral for this internship to be an opportunity to potentially begin a long-term career within the company, depending on how the internship went. I’ve now been able to secure a role within the company which probably wouldn’t have been possible so early on in my career had I not taken part in Admiral Aspire.

What did you do on the internship?

I worked within the Management Information department and was asked to complete a wide range of projects. These included creating a dashboard in JIRA to track department performance, as well as creating a survey to assess colleague morale within the department. I then analysed the results and presented it to my manager using Excel and MicroStrategy. I was also given the opportunity to take part in training where I learnt how to use MicroStrategy, a business intelligence tool which was new to me. This was great as it helped me to further develop my technical skills.

At the end of the internship, I did a presentation to show everyone the projects I had worked on and what I’d learnt along the way. This was a great opportunity to develop my presentation skills and build my confidence when presenting to people as it’s not something I’d done very often prior to this experience.

I gained invaluable experience working with great people who have an abundance of knowledge. I was able to further develop my communication and presenting skills, while networking with so many industry professionals. It’s given me more confidence to do well in the workplace and I look forward to developing my skills further and adding as much value as possible.

How did you find it?

Working for Admiral has been amazing! Everyone is really supportive, regardless of which department they’re in and their level within the organisation. I was also assigned a grad buddy who was extremely helpful and supportive throughout my internship.

I was given responsibility from day one. Although initially it seemed daunting, it showed the trust my manager had in me, and this gave me the confidence to excel and add value. Even when I needed any help, everyone was always there to support me and were only a call away.

Prior to the Admiral Aspire internship, I didn’t have any experience in a corporate environment, so I wasn’t too sure what to expect. I went in with an open mind and I have to say I really enjoyed it! What stood out to me was how amazing the culture was and how important it is for me to be in an environment where people share similar core principles.

What’s next?

After completing the summer internship, I was offered a part time role as a Junior Data Analyst within the Data Operations department. I accepted it straight away as I feel it’s a unique and privileged position to be in as I’m now able to build relevant professional work experience at such a great company. I feel this is very important in today’s job market as a degree on its own is not enough. So, I’m really grateful for this opportunity and look forward to carrying on developing myself and helping Admiral reach its goals. I’m also in my final year at university studying Economics and Finance, so I hope that over the coming weeks and months I can carry on learning and developing my skills and achieve the best possible grades at university.
