Natalie’s worked at Admiral for 13 years, part-time with us for around six years, initially to allow for more time with her young children, and then as they’ve got older, to have more time for herself. Discover why Natalie feels that part-time working has allowed her to thrive at work.

Can you tell us a bit about what you do at Admiral and how long you’ve worked here?
I work in the Communications and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) department, and head up the team that looks after our internal communications and engagement. I joined Admiral in 2007 as a Communications Officer and haven’t looked back since!
What’s your working pattern?
I work a four-day week with Mondays off.
Why did you choose this pattern?
I began working part-time around six years ago after having my children, originally doing a three-day week then increasing to four days as they got older, as it allows me to spend more time with them. They were born less than 18 months apart and it was pretty hectic at home, but I wanted to enjoy that time with them rather than having to rush around getting everyone ready and out of the house, and then getting home and rushing around getting them to bed, every day.
They’re both in school now but I’ve continued working part-time as I love having a day in the week to myself. It allows me to do all my life admin without it eating into our family time, and I’m able to pursue my hobby of art and drawing by attending classes, having the time to practice every week. Plus, it gives me a little extra time with my children by doing the school runs once a week. I feel like I have the best of both worlds and for me, a four-day week gives me just the right work-life balance.
Was it an easy transition or were there any challenges?
There are challenges working part-time especially in a fast-paced department like mine, but I have a great team who can handle everything when I’m not around. I’m also awarded the flexibility to change my day off if I need to, and both of those things mean I’m able to make it work for me and my team.
Do you find that your work has been impacted in any way?
Yes, but not in a negative way. I think I’m much more efficient and much more decisive now, as I simply have to be.
