Is a Claims Handler a good job at Admiral? Darren thinks so!

25 years.

That’s how long Darren, Operations Manager in Accidental Damage and Loss (ADL), has been working at Admiral in our Claims department, the biggest function in the business

25 years! Now that’s something to celebrate and shout about.

Being the largest department at Admiral, we have lots of opportunities for career growth and development.

It might surprise you too. As Darren touches on, many join us as a “stop-gap” but end up staying longer than they ever anticipated, that’s something we’re certainly proud of. Maybe that’s down to the fact we provide our colleagues with all the skills needed to grow and progress in a fun and supportive environment from day one, or the fact that we like to promote within. Many of our Claims managers started their careers with us as front-line handlers.

Join us as we delve into Darren's inspiring journey, exploring the highs, the milestones, and the invaluable advice he shares. Discover firsthand the enriching experience of a career in Claims at Admiral.

Can you tell us a bit about your Admiral Journey and how your career has progressed from Claims Handler to Operations Manager?

I started in what was our Teleclaims department as a Call Handler in 1998. The Teleclaims team dealt with a range of calls - anything and everything relating to Claims!

This role was a great introduction to the company, I learned a bit about everything and discovered what areas of Claims interested me the most. I worked in Teleclaims for around 12 months before moving to ADL. From here, I moved around to a few areas within Claims - Theft, Third-Party Damage and Audit.

After working in various roles within Claims, I eventually went into management where I held positions as a Claims Trainer, Team Manager, and Deputy Operations Manager, before moving into my current role as an Operations Manager in ADL, where I’ve been for the last seven years. There’s a lot of opportunity to move around at Admiral!

What initially sparked your interest in the Claims department?

I was working in a solicitor's office when I decided I wanted a career change. I noticed an advert in the paper for Admiral, so I applied. I will confess, it wasn’t specifically Claims that I was looking for and I didn’t have a true understanding of the position until I came for my interview.

Like many who join Admiral, I applied as a stop-gap, I didn’t see myself working in a contact centre for the long term. 25 years later I’m still here!

What’s your favourite part about working in Claims or at Admiral in general?

The opportunities and the people.

It’s great to see my colleagues I interviewed for entry-level level roles progress and achieve their career aspirations and goals here! I’m always keen to help advance my team in Claims.

If someone is considering a career in the Claims department, what advice would you give them?

You get out what you put in when you're an insurance Claims Handler in a customer-facing role.

There’s no timescale for progression or jumping on the next challenge, just give 100%, be open-minded and let your work guide you to where you want to go.

Be resilient to change, it’s part and parcel of working here. However, don’t be afraid to speak up if something doesn’t feel right or you think something could be done in a better way.

Reflecting on your career progression at Admiral, what are you most proud of?

I’m really proud of my overall journey here at Admiral. All the experiences and positions I've held have brought me to where I am today.
