Job Purpose

To take ownership and lead in the design, delivery and ongoing maintenance of Virtualisation and Server estate that meets and/or exceeds requirements.

This is a hands-on role and will provide expertise across the server estate, such as server installation, performance, monitoring and clustering.  The need to be flexible is paramount.

As part of this role, you will be responsible for collaborating with multiple areas across IT in order to translate technical requirements into a coherent server design. You will also work alongside the Infrastructure Architect to identify new technologies and emerging trends.

Main Duties

  • Plan, install and support hardware and software upgrades
  • Resolve technical issues associated with ESX, Windows Server, and Linux, using diagnostic and administration tools
  • Act as a point of technical referral and escalation
  • Research new technologies and function as a subject matter expert
  • Diligently share knowledge with others through teaching and/or mentoring
  • Produce/contribute to detailed documentation for existing or new configurations
  • Contribute to the ongoing Continual Service Improvement and capacity planning activities
  • Maintain a hands-on role

In addition to this you will also proactively manage and address any risk issues relating to your assigned duties. You will be expected to complete your duties whilst conforming to any project timelines or service level agreements that are in place.

Experience and Qualifications Required


  • Professional experience working on large, mixed-technology, multi-site server environments
  • Practical experience in the following Server areas:
    • Creating Low-level design documents
    • Server automation
    • Operational maintenance e.g. patching and failovers
    • Implement policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of server infrastructures
    • Server performance monitoring and tuning
    • Scripting skills with Powershell, Ansible, Terraform or DSC
  • Able to work with structured frameworks, methodologies and best practices
  • Practical experience using Server and Virtualisation technologies including:
    • Windows Server 2012, 2016 & 2019
    • Linux Centos or RedHat
    • VMWare ESXi, vSAN, vCenter
    • Cloud Technologies (AWS and Azure)
    • VEEAM replication
    • Enterprise security patch management
  • An ability to learn from, and adapt to, a changing technical environment
  • Demonstrable analytical and proven creative problem-solving skills
  • Strong inter-personal, organisational and communication skills


  • A working knowledge of System Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
  • A working knowledge of storage, backup, networking technologies
  • Experience working in agile based environment
  • Experience working in a support environment
  • MCSA, MTA, MCSE certification
  • VCP certification
  • RHCSA, RHCE certification
