Admiral Group is in the process of diversifying, with a goal to create business lines equal in size to its insurance businesses by 2025. In 2016, Admiral Group launched a financial services business offering a market-leading personal loans product and in December 2017 launched the first direct-to-consumer secured car finance products available in the open market in the UK. 

Admiral Financial Services (AFSL) is now looking for a Lawyer to join the team (fixed term maternity cover).  This position will be a broad commercial role and will report to the Head of Legal.  It will involve working closely with senior colleagues in AFSL and across the Admiral Group. 

The variety of the legal issues and the ambition of AFSL to expand across the financial services sector means this will be an exciting and rewarding role.

The principal duties will be:

  • Delivering proactive, effective and responsive legal advice to AFSL in relation to a wide variety of matters including strategic development, outsourcing arrangements, supply contracts and customer terms and conditions
  • Drafting and negotiating agreements with third party suppliers, ensuring that AFSL’s exposure to risk is effectively managed
  • Working closely with the other teams within AFSL including Commercial, Credit Risk & Pricing, IT, Compliance, Finance, Marketing and Product
  • Developing and maintaining precedents for use by AFSL
  • Understanding and engaging with policies and procedures established by Group Legal and Procurement and working closely with both teams as well as other Group support functions as necessary
  • Providing assistance to the Head of Legal as required from time to time

This is not a full definition of the role but covers the main aspects and drivers for success.

Experience and qualifications required:

  • At least 4 years PQE
  • A qualified lawyer with strong post-qualification experience at a commercial law firm or large in-house institution
  • Commercial experience and excellent academics are essential
  • Experience in the financial services industry beneficial
  • A team-player who can work effectively with colleagues at all levels who also has a detailed and forensic approach to their work
  • Confident to independently handle a variety of complex legal issues as well as some routine and ad hoc legal queries
