Job Purpose

Admiral’s Data and Analytics (DNA) department is Admiral’s newly formed function, delivering a world-class data platform and analytical capability.

It brings together highly-skilled colleagues from IT and analytical backgrounds and is applying DevOps practices to the full data lifecycle. This DevOps Engineer role is critical to the success of DNA: developing and managing the team’s delivery pipeline and change processes to be consistent, timely and aligned to agile principles.

The role will take the lead in delivering the underlying practices, tools and systems, ensuring continuous service improvement and supporting product delivery through development and into live. The DNA environment is primarily Google Cloud Platform (GCP) based, so you will be working at the cutting-edge of the fastest-growing and most innovative public cloud providers.

Main Duties

The main duty of this role is to develop and support the delivery pipeline for DNA, in alignment with Admiral’s architectural principles, policies and best practices. You will work closely with colleagues in the DNA team and Admiral IT to ensure new product deliveries and maintenance of existing product are efficiently integrated, configured and optimised in a controlled and timely manner. You will:

  • Enable and support infrastructure and code-based deployments across cloud (GCP and Azure) and on-premise environments, creating and administering the builds / deployments where required.
  • Create and manage automated builds / deployments across various technologies.
  • Maintain an automation first principle for deployment assets.
  • Manage the processes of upgrades and patching.
  • Ensure all processes are documented and remain up to date.
  • Assist in the creation and development of processes for builds and deployments, working with project / development teams where required.
  • Provide assistance and guidance for development teams on processes and best practices, as well as research new technologies, and function as a subject matter expert.
  • Act as a point of technical referral or provide 3rd Line Technical Support, where appropriate.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Professional experience in large environments on:
    • Cloud based build technologies (Google Cloud desired, but not essential).
    • Automation tools e.g. Ansible, Terraform.
  • CI / CD experience; both maintaining and setting up new pipelines.
  • Sysadmin experience, ideally in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and 7 estate.
  • Operate as a lead for operational maintenance e.g. patching and failovers.
  • Able to work with structured frameworks, methodologies and best practices.
  • An ability to learn from, and adapt to, a changing technical environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience with Ansible, Terraform, Jenkins, Nexus and Maven.
  • Working with project/development teams to develop new build and deployment solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team (co-located or dispersed).

  • Experience in Data / Analytics workloads.
  • Knowledge in automated test tools.
  • Experience in various firewall technologies.
  • Experience of working in Agile (SCRUM).
  • Experience of working in the financial or insurance sectors.
  • TCP/IP Network troubleshooting and support, including DNS & HTTP protocols.
