About the role:
You’ll run your own litigated caseload within the Complex Litigation team, ensuring that all aspects of injuries and losses are explored and advanced. The caseload comprises of referred cases from Complex Pre-Litigation teams and other areas of the business, ripe for maximisation and utilisation.
You will act at all times, in the best interests of your client, litigating and advancing the issued case to a proactive outcome. Your caseload will comprise a mixture of admitted and denied liability cases with the potential to be of significant value. In common with the Pre-Lit Complex team, your role is central to developing these cases, either settling them yourself or referring them to the Serious Injuries team where appropriate.
You will be at the heart of the business, operating as the linchpin between Pre-Lit/FT Lit and SIT.
You will be based in Capital Quarter office in Cardiff, working core hours of 39.5 per week.
There is an expectation you may need to travel to court, counsel/witness meetings, or for external training, which may necessitate exceeding these hours or having overnight stays. Reasonable expenses will be covered. You will have the opportunity to engage in your advocacy where appropriate and with correct training/supervision.
In addition to your role, you will be expected to mentor handlers in the Pre-Lit Complex teams, and other departments, assisting them with queries in both case handling and workshop/training situations. You will work closely with SIT, identifying cases suitable for the MT and on occasion running such cases with SIT input through the ‘buddy system’.
There will also be opportunities to shadow SIT handlers on significant and catastrophic MT cases, attending conferences, hearings and settlement meetings. A positive approach to cross-department communication is essential.
You will be provided with an achievable target. Additionally, you will be expected to play your part in any marketing events, both internal and external.
About the Complex department
The Complex teams were created in August 2016, comprising for the first 2 years of a dedicated team of Handlers predominantly handling the more complicated, interesting claims.
These are usually unique injuries, specialist losses or a need for multiple medical experts. Claims are issued Part 7 or transferred from Part 8 to ensure they are run effectively and efficiently towards settlement. These cases often advance towards a trial where we have a very good success rate. The team plays a valuable role in developing complex claims for the SIT, having nurtured the claims to a Multi-Track value.
The new mantra of the department is that every case referred pre-litigation should be considered for drop out of MOJ for complexity, and thereafter we will test the costs regime for exiting Fixed Recoverable Costs due to exceptionality. We are using ground-breaking arguments and tactics which are not prevalent in the industry. This is your opportunity to be at the cutting edge of an area which will cause Defendants representatives to pay close attention to us.
As Admiral Law has grown, the number of cases referred to the team has risen. Inevitably, the growing focus on the many complex claims in the business has led to the evolution of a stand-alone department, and the introduction of a new team of Complex Litigators in 2018, and the introduction of a second Pre-Lit Complex team.
It is for this new team of Complex Litigators which we are currently recruiting, with an eye on the continuing expansion of the department. In this role, your opportunities are many and varied.
You will have a proven background in running complex and/or litigated injury claims, is essential for this role. Whilst supervision and mentoring will be provided, you will be expected to identify value and handle cases of considerable complexity progressively.
A hunger to learn and develop your ability is a prerequisite as is a commitment to shared learning, teamwork, and constructive communication. We want the right person for this role.
At Admiral, we are proud to be a diverse business where we put our people and customers first. We understand that a good work life balance is important, and we want you to have an element of freedom to define a working lifestyle that supports this. We are happy to talk about flexible working.
