The Security Architect has the responsibility to understand the changing needs of the IT and business teams and direct the security architecture team to match controls, countermeasures and security strategy to the protection needs of a regulated financial services company.

The Security Architect will see the macro view, direction of travel and complexity of the contemporary IT landscape as an opportunity.  They will have the ability to create control roadmaps, generate threat led integrations between security products, and gain a measurable security improvement in each task they are involved with.  They will provide solutions that harmonise with IT and create enabling security functions that allow the business to innovate quickly.

The Security Architect will:

  • Create and maintain component security roadmaps for the Group
  • Create patterns for deployment that simplify and accelerate the best practice for cloud
  • Identify opportunities to leapfrog traditional IT security challenges through automation and orchestration
  • Understand the changing nature of risk as the IT landscape evolves
  • Work with the Security Incident Response Team Manager to determine effective security detection and prevention approaches

  • Champion best practice methods for web application hosting and protection, endpoint management and software defined protection
  • Support budget planning and contract renewals to ensure the UK and groupwide business achieve the optimum balance of security against expenditure

Experience Required

The role would suit a technologist who has had an operational role in the past and understands the link between good technical controls and threat mitigation.  It would also be suitable to have proven experience in delivering security architecture and controls that sidestep the mistakes often made in the early stages of maturity.

Strong working knowledge of at least one of Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure is highly desirable. In addition, a security technical/computing degree is beneficial.

Good understanding of a recognised architectural framework such as TOGAF / SABSA is not essential but understanding when such frameworks provide value and their limitations is advantageous.

Further to this, you must have experience in developing control frameworks that meet recognised industry standards for large enterprises.

Demonstrable experience in security architecture, and design of end to end architecture lifecycles and patterns, within medium/large corporate organisations is required.

The ability to communicate effectively, constructively, confidently and professionally is key to the success in the role.

Experience of working within a large complex corporate environment, a working knowledge of financial services and the typical business processes involved together with the threat actors and their relevant tactics, techniques and procedures would be of significant advantage.

The candidate should have a broad knowledge of security and a strong technical grounding, security certifications such as CISSP, CISM etc are highly desirable.

Why work in Wales?

The Admiral Group employs more than 10,000 people across eight countries. That said, we’ve kept the bulk of our operation in the country it all started in, Wales, with impressive offices in Swansea, Cardiff and Newport.

We have a great work culture and work-life balance, and our employees pride themselves in working in some of the best cities in the UK. In a short drive you can be in the Brecon Beacons, or the pristine beaches of the Gower. Also, if you want a weekend away, we’re not far from Bristol and London! As for the capital city, Cardiff, there’s more green space per capita in the centre than any other city in the UK.

Whilst the capital city is much smaller than London, it is home to some of the biggest events in the Principality Stadium, in addition to all the local events that are happening every week (i.e. food festivals, ice hockey, sports clubs etc.). Employees who join Admiral from all over the UK, and oversees, are amazed at how much there is to do in Cardiff, and are pleasantly surprised in the reduction in the cost of living!
