Our volunteering project for Age Concern
Central Underwriting wanted to give back to the local community so we used our afternoon out team building to do just that. We contacted Age Concern Cardiff and offered our services for the afternoon to help the elderly with any odd jobs, gardening, etc. We were assigned Hill Croft care home in Llandaff, which is a residential home for elderly people suffering from dementia.
Our job was to give their grounds a little bit of TLC and transform the gardens into somewhere the residents could spend a lot of time and get a lot of enjoyment. Before our big day, we did some fundraising by organising a bake sale, where our very own Danny and Scott went round the floors selling tea, coffee and Cakes made by members of the underwriting team. This raised £80, which allowed us to buy a lot of plants; birdhouses and patio pots to give the gardens a good spruce up and get some wildlife into the gardens for the residents to enjoy.
Some of the residents also got involved by helping us choose what plants we used, and where the garden furniture went after the patio was cleaned. Our main helper, May was with us for most of the afternoon. After 5 hours of weeding, digging, planting, potting, mowing, jet washing and painting, our work was done and their garden was totally transformed. All the staff and residents at the home were thrilled with their new gardens and were already gathering outside to enjoy the rest of the sunshine as we were putting our tools away!
A huge thanks to Anton, Kate, Helen, George and the Admiral Academy for your kind donations.
