Today, corporations and businesses in countries across the world will light up purple or fly a purple flag to celebrate the economic power of disabled people across the globe because December 3rd is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This day was first launched by the United Nations in 1992 and is now a globally recognised date that brings together a united voice to celebrate and empower people living with disabilities.

Over 1 billion people in the world have some form of disability, that’s 1 in 7. It can affect any of us at any time in our lives. The image at the end of this article highlights the possible number of our colleagues who live with a disability (figures are approximate, based on national statistics and not personal staff data).  

As part of the continued work of our Disability Forum we have decided to celebrate this day and show our support by turning our intranet site purple.

What is our Disability Forum?

The Disability Forum was created to improve awareness, discuss ideas and implement adjustments to improve the workplace for our customers and colleagues living with disabilities. It is headed up by our Employee Health and Wellbeing Manager, Bec Walters, and is made up of a cross section of staff from across the business including employees with disabilities who have a ‘lived’ experience to share.

Supporting #PurpleLightUp is a clear message that we will continue the work of our Disability Forum. It also shows that we are committed to encouraging conversations about disability and strive to be an inclusive employer.
