Tim’s Journey – From Internship to Graduate Programme
Tim joined our Undergraduate Summer Internship in June 2016 before completing his final year of studying Accounting and Finance at Cardiff University. He later joined our Graduate Programme in February 2018.
Why did you choose your university and degree?
Cardiff was my closest city to home, the university had a great reputation and lots of my friends from school were also going to Cardiff. I originally started studying Economics but switched over to Accounting and Finance after enjoying the practical application of an Accounting and Finance module in my first year.
What sparked your interest in Admiral?
I came to know about Admiral through my brother. He had worked at the bi-annual Admiral Summer Party and told me about his experience. I started researching the company and began to notice the vast amounts of awards won for being a great place to work. Whilst researching, I came across the advert for the undergraduate summer internship. Given the things that I had seen and heard, applying seemed like a great idea!
How did you find the recruitment process?
In comparison to a lot of other companies, I really liked it. The recruitment team just seemed keen to get to know me as a person.
If you’re thinking of applying, my advice would be to stay calm, be yourself and let your personality shine through.
What did you do during the internship?
I was placed in Claims Solutions and had the opportunity to work on various projects. At the time, Admiral were doing schemes with Cardiff Masters, so one of the things I had responsibility for was liaising with lecturers and MA students at Cardiff University, providing them with the information they needed to complete their projects. I also met with third party suppliers and negotiated about the possibility of Admiral using their products. Alongside our work, we as interns were asked to raise money for a charity, so we threw a pub quiz on our last day as well.
Why did you decide to stay on at Admiral, after the summer?
Everything – I picked up a lot over the summer, made lots of friends and became immersed in the Admiral culture; it really didn’t feel like work.
I decided to stay on because I already loved the city, I had gotten to know the company and I was very happy. Now being on the graduate programme, I can honestly say I don’t think I’d want to work anywhere else.
How did you find your induction for the Graduate Programme?
We had five weeks training to begin which involved meeting various departments, team building exercises, sessions with the Admiral Academy and induction training with Customer Services to help us understand that customers should be at the forefront of our decision-making at all times. The training was a great introduction to the programme and we were lucky enough to meet David, our CEO, on the first day.
What will your first placement on the Graduate Programme involve?
I’m going to be working in our Travel Insurance department. I will primarily be working on projects to help improve our customers’ journey, but because the department is so small, I will have the opportunity to help out with other projects and get exposure to all aspects of the Travel department.
Would you recommend applying for the Undergraduate Summer Internship?
Definitely apply for the summer internship! The amount of responsibility you are given over the summer is incredible for an undergraduate level placement and you develop so much over the three months. It’s a really valuable thing to have on your CV when leaving university and if you’re interested in our graduate programme, the internship also prepares you well for what you would encounter.
