The people behind the promotions: Vicky, People Services Executive

Vicky, our newly appointed People Services Executive chats to us about her career at Admiral and offers advice to those wanting to progress.

‘’I joined Admiral as an Outbound Sales Call Handler, straight after finishing university in June 2007 having studied Criminology. Initially I thought of it as a stop gap, but after 10 months I was promoted to Senior and after a further year and a half I was promoted to Manager within the same department.

‘’I was doing well and enjoying the job so much; it’s a hard working, dynamic and tough department to be in but it’s also extremely rewarding and very fun.

‘’Three and a half years later I moved to the Compliance and Quality team in Outbound managing and monitoring risks as well as my own team. During this period I was also lucky enough to be able to complete my MBA. This gave me a strategic view of business operations, enabling me to implement and enhancing learning’s into my day to day job.

‘’After doing a variety of roles in Outbound starting as a call centre handler and working my way up, building on my experiences of managing people, processes and systems, I learned a lot and after 10 years in the same department, I was ready for a new challenge.

‘’I joined People Services (HR) in June 2017, my role here is to be the referral point the Customer Assurance team – if anyone in Swansea has any HR related queries or advice, they come to me (or one of the team). I am utilising skills gained from my previous management roles, as well as my MBA, to help people progress and help managers to manage effectively. I am also on the Case Management team helping people who are off work, sign posting them to relevant help to try and assist them coming back to work.

‘’I am thoroughly enjoying my new role; there’s a lot to learn and no two days are ever the same but I have such a supportive peer group around me, the culture is that everyone is here to help and support everyone – I love being a part of it. I also like that whatever idea or suggestion you have it is met with such optimism and a ‘let’s try that’ attitude – everyone wants Admiral to succeed.

‘’The advice I'd offer to anyone wishing to progress their career is that you should take any advice you get from peers or management on board – be receptive to feedback and be patient, sometimes where you want to be won’t happen overnight but be persistent and willing to work hard and you’ll get there.’’
