Say hello to our Confused.com graduates!

Now that our Confused.com graduate programme is live we thought you might like to hear from our last intake. We last recruited for our IT graduate programme in 2013 and took on seven graduates. Find out more from some of them below!

University Background

Calvin went to Greenwich University and graduated with a degree in Computer Networking. Lilly and Ben both graduated from the University of Glamorgan with a degree in Maths. Nicholas has a degree in Creative technology and Chris has a degree in Computer Studies - both from Glamorgan as well.

What would you say to someone considering the graduate programme?

Calvin - Go for it, it’s a good way to gain some useful on the job training both technical and non-technical. ILM courses help with the management skills training.

Nicholas - definitely a strong route in the IT world.

What's the one thing anybody looking to join us on the programme should know?

Calvin - Don’t over think it, once you start you will be looked after to make sure you have access to all the tools that you need to learn. It doesn’t necessarily matter what degree you hold. The main thing is being willing to learn.

Lilly - Don't be intimidated and worry about not knowing everything. You will learn a lot when you get here, nobody expects you to be an expert from the start.

Have you been able to apply skills from your degree?

Ben – Maths taught me how to look at problems logically and this has definitely helped when it comes to being a systems developer.

Calvin - I guess in a nutshell yes. All the problem solving skills you learn in university is definitely transferred to a work environment.

Nicholas – Yes, my degree was around creative technology so I can definitely see where those skills have helped me.

What would you say to someone sceptical about working in insurance?

Nicholas - You don't realise how important insurance is until you need it! Everyone needs insurance and it’s a very competitive market.

Chris - You learn more about the industry in general not just the technical aspect.

How was on the job training and support?

Calvin - The support is really good both technical and non-technical

Chris - Having a mentor was essential and useful as an extra means of support.

Lilly - It was a very steep learning curve but we had lots of support and there was always someone to turn to for advice and a bit of guidance.

What training have you been on or had available to you?

Ben - During the first year of the program we completed Microsoft IT certifications as well as ILM (management training) and lots of in house specific training.

Chris – Training never stops even now we still have the option for self-study and get certified, I recently passed Microsoft SQL Server course and the XML master.

What’s the best thing about living and working in Cardiff?

Ben – You are never more than 20 steps away from a coffee shop!

Nicholas - The city has everything you need

So what exactly does your role entail day-to-day?

Chris - I work as a support analyst and triage partner change requests to see if they are feasible and put them on the queue ready for development.

Nicholas – I am now a client side developer so I send most of my time creating content pieces and building template pages for developers as well as fixing any bugs that come up.

Ben – I am a systems developer on the product team so my job entails working with the product owners to make changes to the website, bug fixes and monitoring live releases to the website.

How do you see your career developing longer term?

Chris – My aim is to continue to increase my skillset and progress as far as I can within Confused.com.

Lilly – I want to continue taking on more and more responsibility within the product team and become an expert at what I do. There’s also loads of opportunities here to move around within departments if I ever fancy a new challenge!

What’s the best thing about your job?

Calvin - No problem is the same, every day you face a different challenge and yeah the culture in the office is relaxed so you can have fun, but at the same time be able to do your job effectively

Chris - the social side is brilliant; we go on lots of team outings and fun money events, as are the benefits, such as a twice yearly share allocation!

Any last words of wisdom?

Calvin - Go for it! And we look forward to working with you!

Lilly - Don't be afraid to ask questions! Curiosity is key.
