Our annual graduate summer social
With Cardiff Bay glistening in lovely summer sunshine, we could not have chosen a better day for our annual graduate summer social.
After leaving our respective departments around lunchtime, we all convened at The Dock for a delicious lunch in preparation for our anticipated mysterious treasure trail in and around the local area.
Based on finding answers to clues in order to uncover a secret code word, the trail took us around Mermaid Quay and absorbed us in Cardiff’s rich cultural history. We had the chance to explore the Bay’s Wetlands Reserve and to journey half way towards Penarth taking in hints, tips and clues along the way (along with the odd Mr. Whippy ice cream which was an absolute necessity).
With preparations for the Champions League Final well and truly under way, moving around the Bay proved to be a mission in and of itself, however our navigational skills proved to be top notch as we were able to successfully find all the clues – although some were more tricky than others!
From finding a statue of Ivor Novello and the Norwegian Church’s first brick laid, to discovering the different types of birds in the Wetlands and code-breaking the letters on the face of the Millennium Centre, the trail offered a crash course in Cardiff and the Bay’s historical and cultural presence.
The day also provided us with an invaluable opportunity to get to know one another better and to work in a team on something novel and non-work related.
Overall, it was a great day out that was organised for all of us – just next time I think we should all bring some sun cream!
