Inside Admiral

Find out what we do for Young Leaders in South Wales

Did you know that we are involved with the Young Leaders programme? This is a programme for young people in South Wales run by Acorn - Learning and Development, in partnership with the University of South Wales.

The Young Leaders programme runs from November to January and all the young people involved, from ages 14-19, spend the first few weeks learning about developing as a leader and developing a work team. They complete the ILM (Institute of Learning and Management) 2 qualification in team leading skills and visit a real workplace to learn about leadership first hand.

So what does Admiral do?

We come in right at the end of the programme. The young people will visit either Admiral or John Lewis in Cardiff and hear from managers within these businesses. Nine young people came to visit us this year and spent two days in Ty Admiral, hearing about leadership from some of our senior managers, taking a tour of the offices. They were given an overview of what we do as a business and how we grow our managers the Admiral way. They also spent some time listening in to conversations with our customers. At the end of the two days, they had to complete a quiz about what they had learnt and present back to a group of our managers on "What are the qualities that make a great leader?"

Amy Evans, who works for Acorn and looks after the young leaders through the programme, said "Our Young Leaders thoroughly enjoyed their time at Admiral. You were amazing hosts and they are still talking about it a week later! Our Young Leaders hope to implement the things they have learnt into their own practice and some are itching to come back for more! Thank you Admiral!”

Here's what the young people had to say about their visit to Admiral:

“I thoroughly enjoyed designing a business proposal. It was an opportunity to apply our knowledge and work as a group. This work experience gave me a taste of what it is like to work in a fun and encouraging environment. I hope they continue this way into the future.”

Lewis Williams

“I would like to go back in the future because they have opened my eyes on where I would like to work in the future. There was not a part of the experience I didn’t enjoy. Great experience!”

Elliot Gingell

“The placement was run brilliantly. Admiral is a unique place to go and see. Every part of the experience was amazing and it made me want to work there.”

Jack Pierce

“Real work, real people, real experience.”
