Essential qualities of a great leader

As Chelsea Football Club has parted company with manager Jose Mourinho we asked our staff for their thoughts on the qualities of a great leader.

Chelsea has confirmed 'The Special One' is their most successful manager in its 110 year history but admitted in an official statement that "both Jose and the board agreed results have not been good enough this season and believe it is in the best interests of both parties to go our separate ways."

So, just what qualities do you need to be an effective leader?


Admiral's chief financial officer Geraint Jones said: "Effective leadership is about being able to inspire and instil confidence in your team.

"It's about treating people with respect and helping to get results."

Inspirational and engaging

Katie Watts is a trainer for Admiral in Customer Services and said: "I think being inspirational and engaging is the most important thing.

"In my role I have to make an impact on people that I've never spoken to at all before and I need to make a lasting impression in the training room and make sure I engage with them from the start."

Be a great people person

Matthew Louis leads a team of staff at Admiral but had no prior management experience.

He said: "When staff have issues you've got to be there for them and you've got to motivate your staff.

"I had no management experience before I came here and Admiral gave me all the tools to learn about leadership and communication."

Lead by example

Kristy Chorley works in a team of call handlers in Customer Services for Admiral in Swansea and said: "You should not ask anybody to do something you would not be willing to do yourself.

"At Admiral, if you make a mistake everybody is there to help you.

"I've never experienced a management structure like this before."

Always listen

Listening to opinions is a key management skill according to Stacey Johns who works in Customer Services for Admiral.

She said: "You've got to listen and take everyone's opinions on board.

"We are such a big company and a big operation that you are not going to please everybody 100% of the time."


Jason Hope is a call handler in Admiral's Swansea Customer Services department and said: "It's about friendliness and good man management and that makes you happy as well.

"When everybody is happy you can't beat that."
