Actuarial Analyst

Admiral Group is currently recruiting for a Data Analyst to support our Actuarial Team. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is looking to apply data skills into a new environment, one which will challenge but ultimately reward you with responsibility for inputting to key projects and business outputs.  The role is based out of our Head Office in Cardiff but with flexibility for the candidate to work from home.

The Role

This role will be within in our Actuarial Team within Group Finance and reports to the Head of Reserving.   You would be responsible for supporting our actuaries with data management, processes and controls.  Currently, these are owned and run by actuaries, but we want to enhance our team with a data specialist to execute these tasks.

The different areas of actuarial work that you would support are reserving, capital management, catastrophe modelling and reinsurance. These actuarial processes rely upon accurate data which is reconciled against data in other parts of the business and is provided efficiently. Typical data that is required is for premium, claims and expenses, and these are often required to be split or aggregated into different levels of granularity to support the actuarial analysis. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Annual/quarterly/monthly support for actuarial data processes, including:
    • Processing of actuarial data and undertaking data reconciliations
    • Documentation and tracking of data controls.
    • Liaising with actuaries and other functions (e.g. finance or claims) on data discrepancies
    • Providing actuarial data to other functions (e.g. finance)
    • Liaising with our Auditors to answer their questions on data.
  • Driving continuous improvement for actuarial data initiatives, including:
    • Identifying and resolving recurrent data differences between actuaries and other functions
    • Enhancing data by helping to obtain more granular splits of data and checking these new data processes.
    • Improving efficiency in the data processing and control processes
    • Managing a single source of truth for actuarial data, including data definitions
    • Maintenance of documentation relating to actuarial data processes and controls
    • Improving data visualisation to enhance reporting and insights.
  • Leading the actuarial data aspects on our projects. Examples of upcoming work include:
    • Decommissioning current tools that provide actuarial data, and helping to implement new data processes and tools (e.g. Cloud data tools)
    • Documentation of data flows for data underlying actuarial analysis and modelling
    • Rolling out data controls from main lines of business to smaller lines where new actuarial processes are introduced and tracking of the completion of these data controls.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong academic background plus excellent numerical and analytical skills
  • Proficient in spreadsheet and data tools. Experience in Excel, Access/SQL, SAS are essential, plus use of other programming tools and knowledge of Cloud extraction techniques are beneficial.
  • Knowledge of insurance data is beneficial.
  • Proven data experience is essential, as being a self-starter who can drive the actuarial data work is important.
  • Excellent time management skills required to work across business as usual and project work.
  • Ability to work independently and to strict data deadlines that underpin reporting timetables.
  • An eye for detail – not afraid of getting into the detail behind the data to challenge or be challenged.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with both actuaries and other functions (e.g. IT, finance, claims, etc)
  • Effective communication, relationship, documentation, and presentation skills
